Out Now!

It is with mixed emotions I announce the publication of this special project.

Dear friend Elliot Harmon passed away in 2021. Besides leaving behind many mourning friends, family, and colleagues in myriad communities across the country, he left behind a poetry manuscript in progress. A few of us worked over the past few years to move this project forward.

It's so exciting the book is out now! Of course, it comes with the heavy emotions of grief at how this project could've gone had he been here, and what his face would've looked like on his debut publication day.

Gray and Something is a portrait of the literary community and its distinctive characters, from romantic partners to competitors to friends, and it is also a road map and a deep dive into the cultural products of Americana. In these poems, highbrow and lowbrow art have equal footing—any subject is worthy of attention, as long as it is interesting at its core.

These poems deftly illuminate spaces between people in their words and small actions. “He’ll wish he had her email address, so he could not ask her.” With emotional depth and agility, the narrator navigates quickly between the small-scale prickles of life to deeper issues such as frustration over an inability to find the right words for grief’s enormity. Elliot Harmon writes a light humor through the colors of relationships—in tough times of death and illness and pandemic—and in quiet moments of everyday strangeness. In drawing out absences, he emphasizes connections we hold dear. These captured fleeting moments create lasting impressions of our beauty.
